The Governor of the New Provinces of Karno, Sir Daniel Joress, is perhaps the most powerful man in all of the civilized lands of the new continent. In all things, he has the absolute final say, under the direct authority of King Bariston Stormrager IV. Although he wields incredible power, he often does not have the resources to enforce his laws and policies, and this is his eternal struggle as governor.

Daniel Joress was born to Lord Gregory and Lady Martha in Castle Rookstead, an old castle and a part of the original Kingdom of Heathrock. He was educated as a noble, and was well-liked and raised to be the Lord of Rookstead, just like his father and his father before him. Fate conspired against him, when one night, when he was 14, an assassin came in and killed Lady Martha in her sleep. Lord Gregory fought off the assassin, but the murderer escaped in to the night. Grief-stricken and thirsting for revenge, Lord Gregory Joress brought Daniel and his two daughters, Diana and Delilah, to High King Bariston Stormrager III, pleading for help. The High King was less than kind to the grieving Lord, due to a previous feud between the two, and in a rage he banished him to the new continent, Karno. Daniel was taken to the new continent at age 15, and spent the next decade in the fledgling town of Durston, working his way to the side of the Governor, Sir Forres Bluntstaff. By the time he was 24, he was poised to be the next governor, succeeding the ancient Sir Bluntstaff. Daniel fell in love with a local girl named Celia DeRosa, who bore him a son. Unfortunately, Celia died in the birthing process, just before Daniel was proclaimed Governor of the New Provinces of Karno. With sympathy on his side, the new governor was able to create a loyal following, and since then has been traveling amongst the provinces, implementing new laws and better policies, all in the name of High King Bariston Stormrager IV, the son of the man who doomed him to this continent.

Sir Daniel Joress takes his job seriously, to the point of almost neglecting his son. He wants to create a prosperous kingdom, governed by the same laws as the Old Kingdoms, with order and justice in the sight of Hergen. His resources to accomplish this, however, have dwindled. Sir Forres Bluntstaff brought an impressive force with him to the New Continent, but many of those soldiers were lost in forays in to the wild, or abandoned the senile governor and settled lands on their own. Daniel occasionally makes trips across the sea to plead for more resources, more men, and more power, but there is a permanent animosity between him and High King Bariston Stormrager IV, who claims he needs more men to deal with revolts popping up around the unified Kingdom of Heathrock.

Sir Joress is usually very reluctant to talk about the death of his wife, and he has taken no other lover except his work in the 14 years since her death. He is a working man, and he wishes to remain honorable and regain the glory of his family name.
