The Discovery of Karno

After The War of the Bloody Cloth the Old Kingdoms were weakened, their resources spent in the war, and they were craving for something uplifting and inspiring. Searching for a way to appease his people, High King Bariston Stormrager I commissioned the construction of a fleet of ships to scour the seas for new lands and resources for the burgeoning kingdoms. These ships, 14 in total, were to be the finest, strongest, and fastest of any ships ever built by humans. 300 oars each, with heavy prows and huge canvas sails, they would set off in different directions, to bring back what news they could of foreign lands.

The construction of the entire fleet took some 20 years, but High King Bariston I was able to see his fleet off as they searched for hope and prosperity. Unfortunately, he would not see the fruits of their labor. He passed away some 9 years later, and his son, Bariston Stormrager II, took over the throne. He continued his father’s search for new lands for another 12 years, but to no avail. Finally, he commissioned one last mission for the greatship “Saltdrinker.” It was thought to be a suicide mission, up through the Icy Straits near Wolfsbane lands. The Icy Straits were death to most ships, but the Saltdrinker was huge, far larger than previous ships of Wolfsbane, and was able to make it though the ice with minimal damage. On the other side, after half a year of sailing, it spotted land. Trees rose up on the distance, and soon the Saltdrinker spotted the new continent.

It landed north of present-day Nearcross, and its captain, Ferris “Saltrock” Holden, was the first to step forth on to Karno. They were greeted by elves, but not of the same stock as those in the Old Kingdoms. These elves had ears that extended wider than high elves’, and their clothes and weapons were more primitive, and some even went naked. Nevertheless, Captain Holden and his crew were welcomed by the wood elves, and after a time in their woodland settlements, they returned to the High King with tales of a fabulous land, rich with resources and fertile land. The rest of his father’s fleet was converted to transport galleys, and The Colonization of Karno began.
